Even if you dress professionally for work or lack access to a shower, commuting by bike is possible if you apply creativity to your wardrobe and commute. Outfitting your bike with fenders, a rack, waterproof bags (panniers) and lights will prepare you to carry clothing and ride in wet weather.
The Utah Department of Transportation publishes a Utah Bicycle Commuter Guide.
Bike to Work Week / Day
You may wish to use National Bike to Work Week -- celebrated locally in Salt Lake City as part of Utah Bike Month -- as a good target week to get started. This is typically the third week in May, a good time of year for new commuters or fair-weather commuters to get started for the summer season!
Each year, Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County host Mayors' Bike to Work Day, typically held the Tuesday of National Bike to Work Week. This is a community ride, including the mayors of both communities. All are welcome!
Bikes and transit
Maybe you live too far to ride, and want to combine bicycling with transit. Salt Lake City residents can sign up for a discounted HIVE transit pass. Visit the Utah Transit Authority's website to learn more about bikes on transit.
